ARTEMISIA A Chicago Theatre Her Story is Our Story
Julie Proudfoot,
Founder & President
Artemisia is Chicago’s premiere professional theatre for the development and production of all new feminist plays that center on women who have agency, independence, and are the focal point of their own narratives. Our annual fall festival features exciting new works by gifted feminist playwrights in Chicago and throughout the country. Each year one play is chosen for development into a groundbreaking premiere production in Chicago.
Artemisia Gentileschi, their namesake, was a Baroque artist who was rediscovered by Feminist curators in the late 1970’s, and now considered the greatest female painter prior to the modern period. Artemisia's later work portrayed women in moments of power, or triumph, themes the Artemisia Theatre Company, aspires to.
